It’s Over?

Posted in My Job, Class Work, Class by brittany on the May 12th, 2008

I can’t believe it is all over?  I made it through finals week…although just barely.  I am going to need another full week just to recover on sleep.  Usually I get really sick after finals are over because my body is so drained mentally and physically but this semester I am staying healthy so far.  I didn’t pull any all nighters I was able to get around five hours of sleep a night.  Only three of my six classes posted grades and so far I am doing great.  I hope the next half of my grades are just as high and this could be my best semester yet.  I am still nervous about what my chemistry grade is going to be, I have no idea how well I did on that final exam.  It is weird to think that my junior year is over and now I am a senior, where did all the time go?  I don’t want to think too much about the future because pretty soon I will have to decide what I want to do after college and to be honest I am still not sure.  Lately, I have been thinking about the Peace Corps as an option but I want to see what else becomes available to me after I graduate.

I am currently on my lunch break for the orientation office and I have to get back to work.

I can’t wait to go home and sleep.

Howdy, my name’s Alison. So I’m sitting here in Brittany’s apartment and she’s told me that I’m obligated to write a paragraph here. Now she’s telling me what to talk about, but that’s where I draw the line. I’m an adult and I’m gonna talk about what I want… well, I can’t really think of anything, so I guess I’ll take one of her suggestions. She suggested I give advice. I suppose the only advice I can think of is do something you wouldn’t usually do within the first two weeks of college. Trust me, it’s worth it. When I first went to college, I attended West Virginia University (go ahead, you can laugh). Anyways, I ended up joing a community service fraternity by accident. I didn’t realize I had walked into a pledge initiation until I had my right hand up and was pledging my allegiance. Not being one for confrontation, I went with it. It was because of this community service fraternity that when I got to UConn, I decided to look for volunteer opportunities. I ended up at the Women’s Center. Two years later, I still work at the W.C., have just finished up the Violence Against Women Prevention Program class, and will be a TA for the same class next semester. I guess the moral of the story is try something you never thought you would…and the women’s center will take over your life and it will be awesome.

Now I’m gonna give the computer to Emma, cuz she wants to tell you stuff too.

Oh yeah… apparently I am here to tell you what to do in college too. Unfortunately I am not even able to give my own introduction… but I will anyway. Hi, I am Emma, Emily, whatever you like but that is beside the point. I am also supposed to give you some kind of insight to college life, but until you get here you really have no idea what you are going to run into. There is no way that I you could predict what will grab your interest in your first weeks here. I too am a large part of community service program and the involved with the cultural centers on campus. This is fun and all (I can not count the number of evenings that a group of us stayed in the Women’s Center until beyond midnight creating some project for the following weeks and countless shinnanigans in the process) however you learn that your life here does not revolve one single group, event or organization. Along with  WC and the like I am an officer with archery, have a job as a video editor and work with the American Sign Language club learning a new language. The best advice I can offer to you is to you is to be not only involved in as many different things as possible, but to find which of these things you are so passionate about that you can not life without doing them. Look deeply into what opportunities you have when you first arrive, and jump in head first!

Down in the mud, Deep in the mud

Spring Weekend and the many parties is highly over-rated (at least in my opinion). The one thing I look forward to every Spring Weekend is a little UConn tradition called Oozeball. Oozeball has been happening for many years and consists of a very competitive day full of mud volleyball. Our team was made up of all orientation leaders and we lost after our first game. I was super bummed because it was instant elimination from the rest of the tournament. After we lost I went home to shower up and head back to see the final games of the tournament. Dunkin Donuts was handing out free samples and a DJ was there playing music all day. It was nice and warm, just the perfect temperature for a bunch of college students to roll around in the mud.

The Crew nice and clean!
