On June 4 I attended a reception for our New York City alums, arranged by Bill Congdon (UConn Class of 1974) on the 44th floor of the Hearst Tower in midtown Manhattan. Bill is in the center in this picture – he threw a great party. Geno Auriemma was our guest speaker. Since Geno has taken to the no-tie look, we gave away some signed ties as door prizes. Re Telep won my tie for her husband, Peter Telep, Class of 1955. Gilles Garre won Geno’s tie. Gilles and his wife, Debra, are members of The Founders Society.

Corey Christians - Matt Barnette photo
Dan Delaney, who just graduated UConn in May, sent me an email to tell me about his friend and fellow UConn student Corey Christians who will be competing in the Stihl Timbersports Collegiate Challenge in Columbus, Georgia on June 27 on behalf of UConn.
Corey is from Wilton, CT and this past year he started the UConn Timber Sports Team and qualified for the Collegiate championship at their spring meet in New Hampshire. He is 1 of only 6 across the country chosen to compete. The UConn Timber Sports Team competes in lumberjack sports which require accuracy, precision, and endurance in a safe and clean environment. It also appears that it requires a sharp ax.
You can read more about Corey and timber sports at http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/timbersports/news/story?id=3386560

I’ve been receiving photos from alums who were at UConn’s Alumni Weekend June 6 and 7 on our Storrs campus. It was the Class of 1958’s 50th reunion, and they presented a class gift that’s the biggest check I ever held. It’s for The Class of 58 Study Lounge in the Homer Babbidge Library, with all the equipment and resources that today’s students need, and for the 50th Reunion Scholarship Fund. I can’t think of a more fitting gift, from one generation of students to another.

I also crashed the party of our School of Nursing alums who were having a great time but did allow me to interrupt their festivities for some pictures.

Tamara Highsmith
Tamara Highsmith’s triple jump of 44-1¼ at the national outdoor championships last weekend at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, made her the number-seven student-athlete in the nation for this event and earned her second designation as an NCAA Division I All-American. Tamara was also named All-American for her indoor performance earlier this year. She set both indoor and outdoor school records in the triple jump and captured BIG EAST and ECAC titles in that event as well. Tamara has qualified for the Olympic Trials to be held in Eugene, Oregon, June 27-July 6. Tamara graduated with a UConn Bachelor of Science degree in Business this May.
Carin Knight
Teammate Carin Knight, a sophomore, took a 12th place finish at the nationals in Des Moines in the high jump, with a jump of 1.77 meters (5-09.75). Earlier this year Carin earned All-American status in the high jump at the indoor NCAA Championship.
Phylicia George
Sophomore Phylicia George was one of 10 individuals chosen for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team. Phylicia carries a 3.90 cumulative GPA as a physiology and neurobiology major at UConn and is a two-time NCAA Regional qualifier in sprinting and relay events as part of UConn’s 4×200 relay team.
This was a great season for the women’s team and head coach Bill Morgan. The Huskies won the BIG EAST, New England and ECAC Indoor Championships, and the outdoor ECAC title. Congratulations to Tamara, Carin, Phylicia, and to everyone on the women’s team, from an old 440er who still takes an occasional lap around Horsebarn Hill.
