The University of Connecticut and its Division of Athletics will honor the memory of Jasper Howard as the Huskies football team returns to Rentschler Field on Saturday for the first time since Howard passed away on October 18. UConn plays Rutgers at noon in a BIG EAST Conference game.
All fans who attend Saturday’s game will receive a “6″ card in honor of Jasper Howard’s jersey number. In addition, the first 15,000 fans who enter the gates will receive “Jazz Live 365″ wristbands. UConn students who attend the game will receive the same “eye-black” that the Husky team is wearing – one with a “6″ and the other with a “JH”. All UConn students will also receive a “6″ button.

3d floor Gulley Hall
On what must have been my third day on the job here at UConn back in 2007, Senior Vice Provost Suman Singha quietly took me aside and explained â in calm, measured tones â that my office, and in fact the entire Gulley Hall administration building, is haunted. Being from the no-nonsense Midwest, I thanked Dr. Singha for his warnings but privately wondered a little about my colleague. Staff members relayed similar concerns. Later that first semester, some âghost chasersâ from Massachusetts came to campus and caused a lot of commotion looking for spirits somewhere over by the cemetery. Again I shook my head.

To appease Dr. Singha, and also to try to get into the âspiritâ of things, I wrote a blog entry about the Gulley Hall ghost. However, recent developments have led me to reconsider my earlier skepticism. At our last Senior Administrative Team meeting, we decided that the situation requires professional help. Following proper state procurement procedures, we have secured the services of a professional mitigation team who will be on site at a momentâs notice.
Spook Central
So please visit my Gulley Hall trick-or-treat today between 11:30-1:00 on the Busway with complete confidence, knowing that professionals are standing by should paranormal activity be suspected.

As announced by the UConn Police Department yesterday afternoon, we have now made arrests of individuals believed to be involved in the crimes of early Sunday morning October 18, including the fatal stabbing of Jasper Howard.
We continue to mourn the loss of our Jasper. Nothing can replace the void in our hearts left by his death. Yet, I know that many of you will feel reassured by yesterdayâs news.
Our UConn Police Department has done an outstanding job — both investigating the case and ensuring the ongoing safety of our community throughout this difficult time. We are also grateful to the State Police, who have provided us with much-valued support during the investigation.
Many of you have been asking how you can contribute to honor Jasper’s memory.  We have released information about the avenues through which you can contribute to the Jasper T. Howard Scholarship Fund and also reach out to Jasper’s family with contributions. This information is available at the following Web site: http://www.foundation.uconn.edu/stories-of-giving/2009-10-howard.html
During the last 10 days, the UConn community has stood together in support of one another, with kindness and compassion.  People from across the world have sent messages of sympathy and support. Many have commented on the dignity and grace being displayed by members of our UConn community during this very difficult time.
I ask that we continue the compassion and dignity, as we grieve our loss and even as the grief subsides. Becoming a more caring and compassionate community out of this tragedy is perhaps one of the best ways we can honor Jasper’s memory. I’m so proud to be a part of this wonderful UConn community, which stands together in good and difficult times, and thank each of you for your support of one another and of UConn.
Mike

Itâs important that we remember to reach out to our neighbors and communities, even as other important issues draw our attention away from the very real needs of those who live and work right here among us. Please take a moment to complete your pledge form and send it in. If youâve already done so, please accept my appreciation and thanks.
