Pink is “in”

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I didn’t get a chance to say anything about it here in my blog. This photo from our School of Dental Medicine shows the University Dentists team dressed in pink as part of their promotion – they wore pink one day a week to raise awareness of breast-cancer issues and also gave out pink dental hygiene supplies. First row, left to right: Kathy Tosca and Claire Marcelino. Back row, left to right: Dr. Jacqueline Duncan, Agnes White and Violet Pierson. You can read more about the SDM effort at UConn Today.
Many of our student groups, colleges and schools, athletic teams, and staff members have participated in Breast Cancer Awareness activities this past month. Breast cancer research and treatment have made incredible progress in recent years, thanks in large part to these national awareness campaigns that have supported needed research and also succeeded in making breast cancer a topic that can be talked about openly. This is a big change from just 20 years ago, and better prognoses for treatment are in part due to earlier detection, helped immeasurably by bringing this important women’s-health issue into everyone’s awareness. You can’t deal with a problem if you aren’t comfortable talking about it.

Thanks to everyone in our UConn family who participated in the October awareness events. I need to get one of those pink toothbrushes to go with my Husky blue-and-white one.
