S.O.L. shirts on sale
The S.O.L. T-shirts are in – you can buy one for $10 at Union Central Exchange C-Store in the Student Union, and $3.50 of each sale will be donated to the continuing project to maintain and beautify our two Storrs campus lakes, Mirror Lake and Swan Lake. If you’d like to donate directly to the Lake fund, there’s a special page on the UConn Foundation web site that allows you to do that. Students and alumni can all get into the swim of this.
Every day I pass Mirror Lake several times – it’s been so beautiful this fall, after our vacuuming effort in August. I wrote a blog entry about it on August 28 (you can find it in the August 2008 archives link, at the left). Our Facilities people did a great job getting Mirror and Swan Lakes back into shape for the Fall Semester. Remember all that goo they pumped out of Mirror Lake?
But the job’s not done. We need to re-landscape the areas around the two lakes in ways that will help us maintain clean water and the beautiful view. And we need to dredge Mirror Lake – an expensive proposition – in order to reach a more lasting solution. One purpose of the Lake is to serve as a catch basin for rainwater from our storm sewers (not our waste sewers). The water is clean but contains dirt and sand from winter ice abatement. Over time, Mirror Lake has filled up with this sediment from storm-water runoff. Some parts of the Lake are several feet deep, others several inches. And then there’s all those geese! You may not have noticed, but the geese can literally walk from the shore to the island!
So I’m raising money to Save Our Lakes – to pay for these extra efforts to maintain a very important part of UConn tradition. I’ve already got my T-shirt. You can get yours at the Student Union, in the Union Central Exchange C-Store:
