What #UConnSummer taught us about our talented Huskies

Just because school wasn't in session didn't mean that we had to stop sharing all of the incredible things our students do via social media. Here at #UConnSocial, we’ve been posting about all of the adventurous and impressive experiences our Huskies have been participating in throughout Summer 2019.

Using the hashtag #UConnSummer, we’ve created a photo series on Instagram to spotlight students’ internship, travel, and work opportunities. What we found most certainly didn’t disappoint: even when Huskies aren’t on campus, they’re still conquering the world, one mountain, one lab, and one city at a time.

Oh the places you'll go! (with UConn)

From Peru to Tanzania, Huskies were travelling far and wide this summer. Here are some especially enthralling highlights from our global #UConnSummer.

As part of UConn’s Engineers Without Borders, a group of Huskies traveled to Peru to build the first of several running-water latrines for a rural community in the Andes. Not only did this team of students design the project, but they independently funded it as well!

Husky Travis Kornegay made his way to Block Island this summer to intern with the Nature Conservancy as an education and stewardship assistant. As part of his internship, Travis lead nature walks, monitored preserves, maintained walking trails, staffed the visitor center and more.

A group of UConn Choir students and instructors traveled around France as part of the UConn Music in Strasbourg program.

UConn student Ryan Miller cycled across the country for 62 days on the Journey of Hope with the Ability Experience to raise funds and awareness for people with disabilities.

After raising $65,000 for Make-A-Wish CT, a group of UConn students climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro this summer with Choose a Challenge USA.

Huskies work hard

Even when the warm weather may have made it tempting to lay at the beach all day, Huskies kept hard at work in labs and offices around the country.

Husky Shelby Houghton interned at the United States Senate as a legislative intern for a Senator. Some of her tasks included responding to constituents’ concerns, attending committee hearings and briefings, and helping write legislation/bills--a dream come true for a Political Science major like herself!

UConn Student Max Neary worked as a research assistant in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at UConn Health where the goal was to improve the treatment of tendon injuries.

Joel Monge coordinated social media and content creation for the Professional Fighters League, an MMA league under ESPN.

Ashley Anglisano interned at AVweb, an aviation-focused news organization. Here she worked on field reporting: some of her tasks included press briefs and video reports on products, events and airplanes.

Noah Sobel-Pressman immersed himself in the startup world at Stanley Black & Decker after forming connections at the UConn School of Business Undergraduate Career Development Office “Career Tuesdays” event that helped him land the internship. Check out our full video about Noah’s internship experience here.

A #UConnSummer is the best kind of summer

Overall, our #UConnSummer initiative on Instagram was a success. Not only did our followers engage with the Instagram content, but it also brought the UConn community closer together by allowing fellow peers, prospective students and other followers to be kept up to date on some Huskies’ lives during the summer. As we always strive to foster and express this sense of community here at UConn Social, our #UConnSummer posts can certainly did just that.
