Joining Snapchat in 2017

We often joke with each other that we (finally) joined the 21st Century with the October launch of our official UConn Snapchat account (@OfficialUConn). And, while we’re playing catch-up on the platform, it isn’t all bad to be diving in late.

Jumping into the platform nearly five years after its debut, has had its perks. Before we launched our account, we were able to do extensive research on what worked, what didn’t work, and what type of content was left uncharted. We knew a Snapchat content calendar would need to be a completely separate strategy, and with one full-time staffer and three students, we needed a solid game plan for how to make this successful.

We knew we needed to tap into the student body on campus, and we had more than enough will participants to take over our Snapchat account for day. That organically transferred into having faculty and staff members take over to show a different perspective. It also added our – what we title – #JobEnvy series, which is comprised of UConn alumni showing off their cool careers that UConn helped prepare them for. More about that series later!

In the meantime, check out a few of our early takeovers:

We’ve done campus scavenger hunts, photo submission contests, Jonathan bobblehead drawing contests, event/sport highlights, among others, and we’re constantly looking for other content ideas to try.

Just a few short months after launching our Snapchat, the wonderful platform announced a redesign. A redesign that has since resulted in our stories seeing significantly less viewership. Did we join Snapchat just in time for it to end? Guess time will tell.
